Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica are charming and charismatic birds but the photographer had only ever seen them from a distance prior to a visit to the Scottish island of Lunga. The weather improved significantly once our boat had passed the Isle of Mull, over which was draped a thick layer of dark cloud. Following a visit to the geologically fascinating Fingall's Cave the boat continued its journey to Lunga by which time the sun was shining brightly and the sky had turned a brilliant blue. This little island is a bird-watcher's paradise as in addition to the Puffins its rich birdlife contains breeding colonies of Razorbills Alca torda and Guillemots or Common Murres Uria aalge. It is possible to get within a surprisingly close range of the first two of these but the Guillemots are more inaccessible although still quite close enough to be photographed with a telephoto lens. The photographer knew that he only had a couple of hours to spend on the island so he concentrated on taking still photographs. When opportunities presented themselves he also filmed the Puffins and Razorbills.
