Up to 25 'school students' are killed after a private bus plunges into canal in southern India - as boy who jumped from the bus is believed to be a lone survivor

t least 25 people have been killed after a private bus plunged into a canal in the Mandya district of Karnataka in southern India.

The bus carrying at least 30 passengers, mostly the school children plunged into the Cauvery canal of the Kaveri river on 24th November around 12.25 pm IST. Only a single person survived in the accident as he had jumped out of the bus before it landed in the water.

Among the dead are children, men and women. The rescue operation is still going on as more bodies are yet to be pulled out from the water. The police reached the spot soon after the mishap unfolded.

In the video, the workers can be seen tying the bus with the help of ropes in order to pull it out. A large number of people can also be seen around who have come to watch the rescue operation.

A few field workers who saw the bus take a dive ran towards the canal to rescue out the passengers but the bus was already in the middle of a deep water, the field workers informed the police who arrived with the fire brigade.

According to the lone survivor, the driver was driving roughly due to which the accident took place. The police have initiated an investigation to discover more about the crash.

The Chief Minister of the region has cancelled all his plans, including a state cinema award ceremony, to rush to the scene.

Mandya is about 100km away from the Karnataka state capital, Bengaluru.
