Beautiful, rare bird with a punk hairdo – the Black-fronted Piping-guan

The Urugua-í Provincial Park in north-eastern Argentina is one of the more reliable places to see the spectacular, rare, turkey-sized Black-fronted Piping-guan (Pipile jacutinga). Black-fronted Piping-guans are restricted to the Atlantic rainforests of south-eastern Brazil and adjacent areas in Argentina and Paraguay. The species is listed as endangered because of habitat loss and hunting. These birds are mainly black and while, with a striking punk hairdo of white feathers on the head, a white eye-ring and red and blue wattles on the brae skin of the throat. One or more Black-fronted Piping-guans gather in the bed of the Uruzu River each morning, standing in the shallow water to harvest algae and probably invertebrates attached to the rocks. This bird had been perching, hidden under the canopy of a small tree on the river bank. It emerged cautiously, and then dropped from the tree to the river bed and began harvesting food from the algae-covered from the rocks in the river. A little later it was joined by another Guan until something startled it and it flew off into the forest.
