A video of a herd of elephants taking a swim in southern India has emerged. The occurrence was captured in Kerala.

The family of elephants were seen swimming in the Periyar river. The big mammals were seen enjoying their outing, taking several dips during the course of the journey. The animals were crossing the river.

Even though it is rare to find an elephant swimming, the largest land mammals are quite good at it, despite their large physique.

In fact, it’s their physique that allows them to float easily.

Elephants also use their trunks as snorkels, therefore, they can literally swim for hours at a stretch.

This herd was caught in the act in the morning.

The state of Kerala is home to many elephants and sighting of a pachyderm is quite frequent. The animals are also widely admired by locals.

The Periyar river is the longest in the state.
