Possibly the biggest animal most people have never heard of, the Gaur, Indian Bison or Seladang, Bos gaurus, is the largest species of wild cattle in the world. On a guided walk through Periyar National Park, I was surprised to find these beautiful and enormously muscular Bovids were not alarmed by the approach of four people on foot; they carried on feeding and sparring while we watched from about 100 paces away. Clearly Periyar is a well protected forest. The species is found across parts of India and SE Asia as far as the Malay Peninsular and is classed as Vulnerable to extinction by IUCN.
