Young male Guanacos wrestling, chest-bumping, nipping and chasing to establish dominance
Guanacos (Lama guanicoe) are the ancestor of the domesticated Llama, and are members of the camel family. They are found in the Andes in Peru, Chile and Bolivia and at lower altitudes in Patagonian Argentina and Chile. They live in small herds comprised of mostly females and their young, led by a dominant male. Bachelor males may congregate in larger herds of up to 50 Guanacos. One of the best places to see Guanacos is the magnificent Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. We stood on the gravel road and watched as young male Guanacos neck-wrestled, chest-bumped, nipped and chased each other as they established their position in the Guanaco pecking order. After about 15 minutes of conflict, the herd of young male Guanacos settled down – some of them began to graze.
