Lions mating on the road right in front of us!

The Lion (Panthera leo) is an iconic animal to see in Kruger Park, South Africa, and is a major attraction. We came across this pair of mating Lions at dusk in the middle of the Mphongolo Loop on the edge of the Mphongolo River in northern Kruger. The male was old, with yellow, broken teeth but the female was young, and still had the spotted belly of a young lion. The pair was not disturbed by our arrival, and instead mated briefly right in front of us, with the male purring then snarling as he mated. The female seemed happy after mating, and rolled on the road. After mating the male moved to the edge of the dirt road and scratched the dirt with his hind feet to mark his territory. He then defecated, moved back to his mate and the pair then moved off to watch the sunset from the river bank. Mating lions leave the pride and spend at least several days together, mating frequently.
