A motorcyclist caught riding without a helmet during Thailand's Songkran new year celebrations had to jump off his bike - and do push-ups.

The eagle-eyed cop noticed the reveller without a hard hat in Chonburi, eastern Thailand on Tuesday (16/04).

He quickly pulled him over but rather than deal with the paperwork and an inevitable fine, the charitable traffic cop made him do 20 push-ups on the wet roadside.

''I hope they learned their lesson and they remember to wear their helmet next time,'' said onlooker Katy Green.

Police in Thailand often resort to unorthodox punishments such as making traffic offenders do push-ups when the offence is relatively minor and it involves a young person who would not be able to afford an on-the-spot fine.
