This is the terrifying moment debris was sent flying as deadly tropical storms battered northern Thailand damaging thousands of homes and killing two people.

Heavy rain and winds of up to 70mph lashed Chiang Mai and other northern regions after temperatures reached 40C - followed by intense downpours.

The severe tropical storms hit some 35 villages on Saturday (20/04) afternoon, as seen in the video, damaging more than 1,000 homes, and up to 10,000 more in different provinces.

In the neighbouring Khon Kaen, a four-year-old girl was killed when storms battered a school causing part of a wall to fall on her.

While on Sunday in Chiang Mai, a 59-year-old woman died after a storm caused a large tree to fall onto her family’s car.

At least 20 other people have been injured and up to 10,000 homes damaged in similar storms, with forecasters predicting more freak weather in the coming days.

Experts believe the heat wave and freak storms have been caused by the El Nino phenomenon.

Seree Supratid, director of the Climate Change and Disaster Center, Rangsit University, said: ‘It’s about 30 to 40 per cent hotter this year because of El Nino. Years with the El Nino phenomenon are hotter than usual.’’
