Lamp posts in London's upmarket Belgravia neighbourhood have been 'greened', to combat air pollution.

The street lamps have been clad in plants known to filter air pollution. Small solar panels in the columns power water pumps to feed the plans, while insect boxes encourage biodiversity.

It is part of a year-long experiment by the University of Greenwich. If successful, the idea could be rolled out more widely.

Several streetlamps have been "greenified" in a street in Belgravia, London. These living columns contain specially selected pollution-loving plants, a solar panel to power the water pump to sustain the plants and bird and insect boxes to encourage biodiversity.
The columns will be monitored by the University of Greenwich over the course of a year and if deemed successful, could be rolled out large scale to thousands of other streetlamps in London, which number 10,000 alone in the borough of Westminster.
