Corovavirus COVID-19: Eyam the English village that ‘self-isolated’ during the 1665 Black Death outbreak
Black Death 1665 The Bubonic Plague in Eyam, Derbyshire, England Social Distancing & Isolation #EyamProtocol (No Voiceover Broadcast version for editing)
In 1665, London was stricken by the Bubonic Plague, which was also called the Black Death.
George Viccars, a tailor's assistant in the small Derbyshire village of Eyam, North England, unloaded a consignment of flea-infested cloth from London.
Within a week, George Viccars was dead.
As the Plague spread around the village, entire households were wiped out & the survivors began to panic.
Families started Social Distancing themselves from other villagers.
To help reduce the spread of the Plague, they buried their dead in fields & gardens rather than the church graveyards.
Over 8 days, Elizabeth Hancock buried her husband & six children. She was however uninfected by the deadly disease.
When the number deaths started to rise, Reverend William Mompessom with the support of Minister Thomas Stanley convinced fellow villagers to stop travelling & quarantine themselves.
This stopped the spread of the Plague to the Northern cities of Sheffield & Manchester.
Without coming into direct contact with neighbouring villagers, money for food and medicine was left in the water at Mompessoms Well & in the holes in the boundary stone.
Their sacrifice over 14 months prevented the further spread of this deadly disease, but killed many of the villagers.
Should the whole world now adopt the "Eyam Protocol" of Social Distancing & Isolation in order to reduce the spread of the CoronaVirus COVID-19?
