Wild Japanese macaques drink from rock pool while seemingly watching their reflection.
High above the city of Kyoto on Mount Iwata, a troop of Japanese macaques has been studied by researchers for more than 60 years. The research site has become a popular tourist attraction where visitors can watch monkeys at close quarters - here drinking from a rock pool while apparently looking at their reflection. Visitors are forbidden from carrying food in their bags, so the monkeys do not hassle them for food. They eat the grain that is scattered (as well as natural foodplants in the forest) and because both species know and respect the rules, it is a wonderful example of human-wildlife coexistence rather than conflict.
