Good Samaritans cross dirty river to take food to workers left destitute by coronavirus downturn
Two heroic Filipino men cross a dirty river to take food to workers who have become homeless after the COVID-19 lockdown shut their workplace.
Onlooker Josephine Guinsinan said their neighbours shared a little something from their food packs after finding that the homeless workers who built a tent under the bridge were not given relief goods.
The residents bundled up their shares in a plastic bag but they had to cross the polluted Pasig River to take them to the workers in Mandaluyong City in the Metro Manila area.
She said: "There is no boat or vehicle available so we had to find another way to take the food to them."
Cousins Glenn Joshua Delgado Lucena, 23 and Jayson Arropo Delgado, 21 volunteered to swim across the dirty river to deliver the bundle to the ailing workers.
The Philippines government has enforced strict measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus including closing down of businesses such as construction activities, which put a toll on the minimum wage workers who comprise the majority of the capital region's population.
