Passers-by formed a human chain to dangle a man upside-down so they could rescue a stray cat in a canal.

The worried residents spotted the crying moggy stuck in a sewer pipe that emptied into a dirty body of water in Bangkok, Thailand on November 28.

One of them wore gloves and volunteered to extract the ginger feline from the opening on the concrete wall but his reach was too short so two others offered to assist.

Footage shows the Good Samaritans joining the DIY rescue operation to pluck the stray animal to safety.

The glove-wearing rescuer was leaning down to grab the moggy while a female street food seller held his right leg and a motorcycle taxi rider held the left.

Onlooker Surawadee Su said: 'The old man was so brave. He would have plunged head first but trusted his neighbours so they could all save the cat.'

The scared feline was put on the ledge and then scampered upon being freed.

The delighted passers-by smiled as it leapt away unharmed. They left out a bowl of water ad cat food for the animal.
