In 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted May 20th as #WorldBeeDay, a celebration of the most important pollinators on the planet whose numbers are declining and whose survival is closely tied to our own. In recognition of this, today's video to #BrightenYourDay in #Covid19 #lockdown, No.63 in the series, is a real-life Ant and Bee movie.
Look closely at these beautiful furry Buff-tailed Bumble Bees, Bombus terrestris, clinging together in the grass. There are at least three, and as far as I can see they are mating - I'm guessing male and female underneath with an optimistic extra male on top? If there is an entomologist in the house, please correct me if I am wrong. What I can't make out is the ant action that surrounds them - the ants do not seem to be attacking the bees, but with there being so many around them it seems more than a coincidence. I look forward to any informed interpretation, if you would bee so kind...
