Pensioners demonstrate motorcycle pillion barriers required during Covid-19 in the Philippines
An elderly couple did an amusing mock-up of the controversial pillion-riding barriers being implemented in the Philippines due to Covid-19.
Footage shows Dioscoro, 67, and his wife Levie, 68 pretending to ride the bike while using a protective shield between them inside their house in Mandaluyong City on July 26.
The wife jokingly creates motorbike speeding sounds while the husband pretends to have a hard time balancing the handle in front.
Novelyn Bualat, the couple's daughter, recorded her parents "test" their home-made barrier which they considered expensive at an average price of at least 500 pesos (10 USD) when bought at stores.
She said: "We cannot afford to buy the barrier so my parents decided to create one instead.
"We used a garter to hang it on my father's back, and while fitting, my mother asked to do a demo."
The barriers are supposed to put a "distance" between the driver and his pillion to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Only couples living together are allowed to ride pillion under the country's COVID-19 guidelines.
The implementation of the barriers became controversial after experts claimed that the proposed design is dangerous because it affects the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
Several accidents claimed to be related to the physical barrier have been reported in the past months.
However, DILG spokesman and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said the barriers do not have safety concerns.
He said: "We do not see this as a possible cause, a possible safety concern. We really need to be careful because even without the physical barrier, there really are accidents that happen."
