Klipspringers (Oreotragus oreotragus) are small specialised, stocky antelopes that live in rocky areas. Their name comes from the Afrikaans words ‘klip’ (rock) and ‘springer’ (leaper). Klipspringers walk on the tips of their hooves, and are extremely agile, bounding away if danger threatens. They are found in monogamous pairs or small family groups, and browse on the shrubs, fruits and flowers growing close to their rocky refuge. They depend on succulent plants for water. The males, called rams, are territorial, and mark twigs with a sticky black secretion from the orbital glands in front of the eyes. A pair of Klipspringers live on a rocky outcrop on the Timbavati Road in Kruger National Park, sharing it amicably with a Giant Plated Lizard (Matobosaurus validus), that can be seen basking on the rock next to the male Klipspringer.
