Residents of a village in southern India from which Kamala Harris's maternal grandfather hailed celebrated the vice president-elect's victory today (November 8th) with firecrackers and special sweets.

Footage showed locals from Thulasendrapuram village in Tamil Nadu setting off the pyrotechnics and enjoying some sweets.

Children printed out placards of Harris and paraded them around the tiny village.

They were also visited by a local minister who came to enjoy the celebrations.

Harris will be the first Indian American, the first African American, and the first female vice president in U.S. history after her inauguration in January.

Harris has spoken proudly of her Indian heritage, mentioning the impact her mother and grandfather have had on her and her career.
