Monkeys in large numbers damaged the area of fields cultivated by residents on the border of Saptosari and Tanjungsari sub-districts, Gunungkidul. One of the locations targeted by the monkeys is the area of the village of Jeruk near Jalan Lintas Selatan Gunungkidul, which leads to the coastal tourism area.
Monkeys arrive in large groups, directly eating and destroying farmers' soybean and mung bean crops.
According to farmers, ape attacks are considered very detrimental. In fact, several types of plants that are ready to harvest have been damaged a lot. Saidah, one of the farmers, admitted that he had to be willing to keep watch all day long in the fields to keep out herds of monkeys.
To reduce losses, some farmers in the border area of Saptosari and Tanjungsari sub-districts had to put a circular net around the fields.
Usually, the attacks will be more severe when the dry season comes. A herd of monkeys from the forest that is starving will target the residents' fields for food.
