Thai protesters converged on a police station on Thursday (December 17) following the arrest of a demonstrator for wearing a royal dress to allegedly mock the country's queen.

The female demonstrator, Jatuporn Sae Ung, wore a silk pink dress at a spoof fashion show in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 28.
Jatuporn was this week charged with royal defamation under the strict lese majeste laws, which could see her jailed for up to 15 years.

Angry supporters converged on the Yan Nawa district police station - many of them wearing similar dresses - to voice their opposition to the growing number of arrests.

There were also reports that another person who wore a crop top - the kind used by the Thai King - at the mock fashion show was also charged with lese majeste. He was reportedly summoned to acknowledge the charge at the same police station.

Dozens of protesters have been arrested by authorities in recent months following a crackdown on the surging number of anti-government and anti-monarchy rallies.

Activists are calling for sweeping social reforms including a new constitution, the resignation of the prime minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and reforms of the monarchy.

Footage from October of the parody fashion catwalk event shows how a red carpet was laid on the ground and several participants imitated important monarchy figures.

The demonstration also came on the same night that the King's daughter, Princess Sirivannavari, held an upmarket fashion show. Thailand has strict lese majeste laws which may override freedom of expression and make criticising or insulting the country's royal family illegal. It took place outside the Sri Maha Mariamman Buddhist temple, or Wat Khaek, as it is also known.
