Thailand's main airport was deserted today (December 23) - at what is normally one of the busiest days of the year - as Covid-19 restrictions continue to keep tourists away.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) which serves the capital Bangkok is normally packed with thousands of travellers returning home for Christmas or arriving for a tropical winter getaway.

However, the coronavirus restrictions on tourists have seen international flights virtually wiped out. Even though visa requirements were eased this month, a mandatory 14-day state quarantine law means that holidaymakers have not yet returned.

An explosion of Covid-19 cases linked to a seafood market in Samut Sakhon province on the outskirts of Bangkok this week has also seen regional lockdowns return - throwing into doubt the plans for tourists to return.
