Aerial footage shows a sprawling field hospital being built in Thailand to cope with the second wave Covid-19 cases.

The 600 square metre mega-facility, which can hold up to 1,000 patients, is being constructed in Samut Sakhon province, where the outbreak began among Burmese migrant workers in December.

Soldiers from neighbouring province of Ratchaburi have been stationed near the site to co-ordinate the efforts.

Drone footage recorded on January 14 shows the ongoing work in the extensive construction site for the hospital.

The land was supposed to be used for building a factory. However, the owner, who is also the district’s mayor, changed his mind.

He offered the land to be used for free as a site for the biggest Covid-19 hospital in the country, as cases continue to surge.

General Narongphan Jitkaewtha, Commander of the Army, said everyone’s cooperation is needed to fight the spread of the virus.

He said: ‘I want to emphasize the importance of having all the sector’s support to prevent and mitigate the Covid-19 situation.’

The construction is almost 50 per cent complete and is estimated to be finished in February.

Thailand has recorded 11,450 Covid-19 infections and 69 deaths. A second wave started in mid-December when hundreds of Burmese migrant workers at a seafood market tested positive. Cases have since spread to more than 45 provinces and lead to lockdowns in some regions.
