A surfer has captured an incredible video of Cornwall’s beaches, boasting picturesque ocean views, huge waves and turquoise blue waters – making the popular English tourist spot look like a Californian paradise.

Jake English, 23, from Fowey, Cornwall began surfing at the age of eight and would paddle out into the ocean almost every day to ride out the waves.

He has since travelled all over the globe to find the best beach spots but still believes his hometown, Cornwall, has the best surf in the world.

Jake recently filmed himself visiting his favourite surfing spot with friends, skilfully riding waves that can reach up to 10 ft high in a scene that looks as if it was taken in California.

“I was introduced to surfing as a classic kid living in Cornwall when I was about eight but back then it wasn't such a big deal to me,” Jake, who works in a kitchen while saving up for an MA degree in cinematography, told Jam Press.

“I try to surf every day, but if work gets in the way or conditions aren't the best, I'll get out for a swim at least.

“There’s a place far north in Norway called Unstad Arctic Surf, that place is legendary, but Cornwall is still my favourite place to surf – there are so many different awesome spots that it's just a super fun never-ending life of search.

“I think Cornwall is such a good place to surf because we get such consistent swell, and with all the different spots there's always somewhere to go.”

Jake’s top areas to get on the board include Fistral Beach, Praa Sands Beach and Watergate Bay Beach – but he recommends novice surfers try Harlyn Bay Beach for more manageable surf conditions.

He pays attention to tide times to get the best waves and often paddles out into the ocean during sunrise or sunset for the incredible views.

He said: “To get the best waves you need to pay attention to the tide times, most spots lose the swell at high tide, so aiming for mid-tide is always a good shout.

“Most of my waves in the film are shot at sunrise or sunset, these times of days make for the best views and it's always awesome to be the first and only one out for the sunrise!

“It can be dangerous surfing In Cornwall, due to several reasons like riptides, tidal currents, big waves, submerged rocks and more!

“If you're not very experienced in the water – make sure to do a risk assessment at every spot you go too, or stick to places where you're comfortable managing the risk!"

Cold winter temperatures don't stop Jake from surfing, as he recommends investing in a winter wetsuit with gloves for those who want to brave out the weather.

Speaking of his love for his hometown, he added: “Everyone finds their own reason to surf in Cornwall, whether it's the waves, the people, the beaches or endless good views, Cornwall has it all!

“I didn't just make 'Our Surfers Paradise' because I love film making and surfing, I did it because I want people to watch it, and be inspired to get out there and try it for themselves!

“Surfing has changed my life exponentially for the better, and no matter what you're going through or how you're feeling, I bet you will feel better after a good surf!”
