STORYLINE
The Minister of Transportation of the Nation, Mario Meoni, died on Friday night in a car accident that occurred at kilometer 112 of National Route 7, near the Buenos Aires city of San Andres de Giles, official sources reported.
The car that the minister was driving collided and overturned, without immediately knowing other details about the accident.
Meoni, 56, was heading to the city of Junín, where his family resides.
The minister was in command of a Ford Mondeo, owned by Trenes Argentinos, and was traveling alone. He lost control of the vehicle and died on the spot.
“It is with great sadness that I received the ungrateful news of the death of @mariomeoni, Minister of Transport of our Government. With him we lose a thorough, tireless and honest politician. An exemplary official. With sincere regret I accompany those like me who have loved and respected him, ”President Alberto Fernández wrote on Twitter.
Many other government officials and political leaders from different parties expressed regret at the news of the death.
Of political origin in the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Meoni joined the ranks of Sergio Massa's Renewing Front (FR), of whom he was very close and whose space he joined the ruling coalition of the Frente de Todos.
This Friday he had participated in the act that President Alberto Fernández had led in Rosario, within the framework of the Alternative Capitals program.
"Today we accompanied President Alberto Fernández in the third meeting of the Federal Cabinet in Rosario, Santa Fe. There, together with the governor @omarperotti we signed agreements to carry out 6 necessary works in the province with a national investment of $ 918,639,458," he had published in his Twitter account shortly after the meeting.
