At least eleven people were killed and seventeen others injured after a residential building collapsed in the New Collector compound, Malad West of Mumbai late on Wednesday night. Search and rescue operation for trapped people is underway. The injured persons have been shifted to BDBA hospital.

Interviews:

1) Rubina Sheikh, Survivor (Female, Hindi, 21 sec):
The building collapsed on her shanty.

" I have two children; I don’t have a husband. My entire shanty collapsed when the adjacent building fell on it. The rubble also fell on me and I was injured. My home is completely shattered, who is going to help me make a new house? My only request to the government is that please help me to re construct my house again.”

2)Taufiq Sheikh , Survivor (Male, Hindi, 08 sec). Son of Rubina Sheikh.The building collapsed on his shanty.

“It was raining very heavily the whole day yesterday. Nothing happened till yesterday afternoon, but the accident happened at night, the building collapsed.”

3) Rashid Sayyed, Neighbor (Male, Hindi, 10 sec):

“There was one resident, a woman - she was 5 months pregnant. She died on the spot. And another woman, died in such a ghastly manner that her eyes, her brain everything had just popped out.”

4) Sunil Gamre, Local political Leader (Male, Marathi, 07 sec):

“That is why the accident happened and these accidents will continue to happen because all these two floored, four floored shanties are illegally constructed.”
