Mumbai billboard collapse kills at least 14 people during storm
A billboard that collapsed on a petrol station where locals were sheltering from a storm killed at least 14 people in Mumbai, India, on Monday afternoon.
Footage captures the 100ft structure as it was blown over by the powerful wind and driving rain in the city's Ghatkopar district.
Officials said the advertising hoarding, which was allegedly constructed illegally, landed on a petrol station where locals were sheltering from the torrential weather.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said they rescued dozens of people who were trapped under the debris.
Bhushan Gagrani, Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation of Mumbai, said 20 to 30 people remained trapped under the wreckage on Monday night.
In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
In a separate incident in Wadala district, scaffolding was blown over by the strong wind, trapping an individual inside a car.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade(MFB), along with the Mumbai police and ambulance services, carried out rescue operations.
Forecasters at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai said the downpour was the first of this year's monsoon rainy season.
Flights at Mumbai airport were temporarily suspended with 15 being diverted, officials said.
They issued a 'nowcast warning' predicting a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain for Thane, Palghar and Mumbai.
