Jakarta, Indonesia is seeing an echo of Delhi’s Covid-19 horrors
This footage was filmed and produced 5 July 2021.
Just two months ago, Indonesia was coming to a gasping India’s aid. Now, Jakarta is experiencing a severe new wave of Covid-19 that has led oxygen prices to jump and the Red Cross to warn of a looming catastrophe. On July 1, Indonesia recorded nearly 25,000 new infections and 504 deaths, after recording less than 200 daily deaths a month ago, with a large share of new infections occurring in its populous capital. This week, president Joko Widodo announced new social restrictions to take effect from tonight, including a ban on restaurant dining, shifting non-essential workers to working from home, and limiting travel.
The video shows almost empty shopping centers as after being hit by the city's semi-lockdown in anticipation of a spike in the COVID-19 outbreak, malls in Jakarta chose to close during the Central Government's implementation of the Emergency Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) in Java and Bali. Jakarta, which has been the center of government, business center, and center of cultural activities for national and international communities, was forced to close access to integration between cities.
The video also highlight the bustling business center of the Senen triangle, Central Jakarta, which has recently been quiet. Even the magnificent buildings of the Cempaka Mas shopping center, which are integrated with bus transit stops between the cities of Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and South Jakarta, are like silent monuments. Meanwhile, the Cililitan Wholesale Center in East Jakarta, which is integrated with bus transit terminals and stops, still shows the defense of business and activities. Inside the mall, there are usually quite well-known mobile phone service outlets and sales agents for pulse traders. With the mall closing during the semi-lockdown 3-20 July 2021, many store owners were forced to go down to the gates and front streets of the mall to sell cellphone services. They do that because they have nowhere else to go to secure the business they depend on for their livelihood. On the terrace of the Cililitan Wholesale Center, a covid-19 test clinic has actually been present since July 1, 2021, because after all, the place is not as quiet as other malls, because it is connected to terminals and bus stops that Jakartans still use. And its existence is also a supporter of food outlets that choose to remain open even though they only serve drive orders.
