Two wrestling monitor lizards held up cars on a busy road in Thailand.

The male reptiles were seen locked in a brawl for mating rights during stormy weather at a u-turn slot in the capital Bangkok.n.

Ignoring the motorists, the pair fought for about ten minutes before chasing each other under one of the passing cars.

A security guard at a nearby shop and a rider later approached the car to scare the aggressive lizards away as the frantic driver did not know whether to drive forward or wait until they leave.

Driver Phattheera Kamdat, 27, said: ‘The cars behind me were restless. I wish they could see what’s been holding up the traffic for so long.

‘I did not want the reptiles to be hurt but I also could not make them leave myself because they were aggressive and too big.’

After almost 15 minutes, the lizards scampered away and disappeared into a vacant lot unhurt before the traffic jam returned to normal.

Asian water monitor lizards have a Godzilla-like dinosaur appearance and are often mistaken for Komodo dragons. They live in canals and ponds in large cities in Thailand where they feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans. They are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria.
