Police save heartbroken tourist from leaping off bridge in Vietnam
This is the dramatic moment police saved a heartbroken tourist trying to leap off a bridge in Vietnam.
Officers wrestled the distressed holidaymaker, 29, from the outer edge of the Thuan Phuoc Bridge in Da Nang province on May 23.
The distraught boyfriend, identified only as SKT, reportedly attempted to jump from the 100ft bridge deck 'due to relationship issues' with a local woman.
He was safely rescued at 12:10 am on Saturday and was taken to the Nai Hien Dong Ward to calm down.
In a statement, the Da Nang City Police said rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 11:45 pm local time on Friday.
It said: 'Upon arrival, the task force discovered a foreign man standing precariously on the edge of the bridge. Despite the authorities' repeated attempts to persuade and encourage him, the victim did not cooperate.
'Faced with the critical situation, Major Tran Van Chau, Deputy Team Leader and commander of the rescue team, immediately directed the implementation of a special rescue plan. Two officers wearing safety belts, using specialised ropes, climbed out of the bridge railing to quickly approach the male tourist.
'Because he was large and strong, he was very difficult to control and drag to a safe area. Only when there was enough support staff were the authorities able to successfully control and bring the victim over the railing to safety.'
Footage shows a cluster of police and firefighters battling to lift the tourist by his legs as he hangs upside-down. They managed to haul him over the railing before pinning him down.
Police said professionals were providing psychological support to the tourist at the station.
