This is the heart-stopping moment a shopkeeper cheated death when a car hurtled into his store in Thailand.

Jaroon Ratsaikua, 38, was texting his friend when a sedan burst through the wall of his auto shop in Songkhla, May 22.

CCTV footage shows the out-of-control vehicle accelerating on the road outside before ploughing through the thin concrete wall of the repair shop. It then smashed into parked motorcycles, narrowly missing shocked Jaroon who was sitting just inches away.

The mechanic was seen walking away from the cloud of dust unscathed.

The male car driver emerged uninjured from the wreckage. He apologised to Jaroon and his wife, claiming he had blacked out at the wheel before the midnight crash.

Jaroon said: 'I'm lucky to be alive. I usually work with my back facing that wall, but I was taking a break and chatting with a friend at the time.

'The driver was not badly injured. He got out of the car by exiting from a passenger door. I told him that if he felt sleepy, he should have stopped to rest.'

He added that the driver had agreed to pay for repairs, including the damaged motorcycles and auto shop equipment.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
