Chaos at a Covid-19 vaccination site in the Philippines caused a stampede of residents desperate for the jab.

Thousands of locals flocked a mall to get their shots a day before the reimposition of a total lockdown due to the coronavirus Delta variant in Las Pinas City on August 5.

Medics and security staff struggled to control the crowd that reportedly came from different provinces.

As the facility only had 500 available vaccine shots that day, those who queued for at least eight hours were asked to return home instead.

One of the residents Nicole Dang Ballaret said: ‘I fell unconscious after the video because I could not breathe.

‘The security guards were kind enough to give first aid and water to me. We really wanted to get the vaccine.’

Despite fears of shortage, National vaccine manager Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr said the country has a ‘desired stockpile level’ of above 10 million doses that could last up to August 17.

He said: ‘That means, we are confident that up to August 17 we will have no difficulties with a shortage.’

The Philippine Department of Health recorded 8,172 new infections on August 5 while the number of active cases rose to 66,895. Meanwhile, at least 21,883,781 doses of various vaccines have been administered so far.
