Thousands of holidaymakers had to be evacuated from campsites overnight (August 16/17) as a forest fire burned 5,000 hectares of land near the upmarket resort of Saint-Tropez in southeast France.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze from the land and the air today although it began to spread more slowly due to dropping winds, officials said.

Fire was declared yesterday evening in the golf of Saint-Tropez, with a hard wind it was impossible to stop it and all the night the firefighters were working hard. People were evacuated, camping closed, all night we smell an horrible fire smoke.
Even in the morning the fire is still there, hectares of wood were burned.
