Hundreds of Afghan refugees in New Delhi demanded that women's rights be protected in their home country.

Many protesters held placards reading "protect Afghan women" as they voiced their anger at the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.

India has announced a new category of electronic visas to fast-track applications from Afghans who wish to leave the Taliban-controlled country.

Scores of refugees hit the streets on Monday to protest against the takeover of their country Afghanistan by the Taliban. The protestors led by Afghan women, gathered at the heart of the national capital where they demonstrated their angst against the status change of Afghanistan from a democratic nation to an Islamic country, as well the future lies ahead for the women there. With placards of "Protect Afghan Women", they sought to raise their voices for the women who are on the brink of losing their hard-earned rights.

Students, mostly women, raised slogans and carried posters demanding support for the Afghan women and children as Afghanistan's capital city Kabul fell to the militia last Sunday. The protest was called by the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) and All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA), outfits of the Communist Party of India (CPI-ML) at Mandi House. There was a sentiment of resentment for the United States among the protesters, especially after the dramatic departure of the US government after fighting the Taliban forces for 20 years and leaving the nation at the brink of collapse.

The protesters also shared disappointment with the world leaders as they claim that everyone knew what was happing in Afghanistan but did not do anything. Even as the Taliban, at a press conference last week, reassured the world that they have changed, their message of moderation was contradicted by the protesters whose families remain stuck in Afghanistan. Many countries, including India, have opened their borders for Afghans desperate to escape another Taliban rule. India has announced a new category of electronic visas - "e-Emergency X-Misc Visa" - to fast-track applications from Afghans who wish to leave the Taliban-controlled country.
