Lottery funds help restore historic fire damaged church in Kent, UK
Sheerness Dockyard church was ravaged by fire in 2001 leaving just a shell, but this is now being painstakingly rebuilt and restored thanks in large part to Heritage Lottery Funding.
As part of the national Heritage Open Day scheme, Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust held an Open Day today (September 11) to show members of the public the progress so far on the historic church, which is considered to be one of the South East's most at risk and important historic buildings.
The church formed a central part of Sheerness Royal Dockyard, which was on a par with better known Chatham, until the admiralty decided to close their Sheerness facility in 1960.
Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust is chaired by Will Palin, son of TV's Michael Palin.
