In an unspecified location in the Kyiv region of Ukraine, soldiers from the country's foreign legion wait in a trench, preparing their weapons for combat with Russian forces.

Many of these fighters are Ukrainians who signed up to defend their homeland.

"I served for 10 years and I know how to fight," says Dima in full combat gear with an automatic weapon strapped to his chest

"My parents live here and my children and I can’t sit at home. I immediately joined the army to defend my homeland," he adds.

Another soldier, who goes by the codename "Fizruk", tells a similar story of fulfilling his patriotic duty.

Some of those serving here, however, have travelled far further to fight the Russian invaders.

As the soldiers chat in Ukrainian beside a pile of rocket launchers, a British voice rises above the hubbub.

This is "Static", a bearded volunteer with a northern English accent, who prefers to go by his codename.

"I'm fighting for democracy," he says with warpaint smeared across every inch of his face.

"Democracy is precious and one man shouldn't decide that another country shouldn't have it," he adds.

This footage was captured on March 7 and provided to Newsflare via the Ukrainian International Legion of Territorial Defense.
