Pool footage shows hundreds of unarmed protesters in the city’s Freedom Square running to escape as projectiles landed around them. Gunfire and loud bangs are heard throughout and clouds of smoke are also seen.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted a video on Twitter, showing a man with a Ukrainian flag armband that appeared wounded by gunfire.

Kherson, a city of a quarter million, was a nearby neighbor when Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.

It was the first urban center to succumb to the invading troops and has been one of the main avenues for Russia's invasion.

Residents have defiantly shown up for regular rallies to support Ukrainian statehood and identity, waving flags.
