KUPIANSK, UKRAINE (RELEASED ON SEPT. 3 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT "RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY" HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Drone footage released Wednesday, Sept. 3, shows Russian forces controlling about half of the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region.
The video depicts Russian troops in the city center and around key administrative and industrial sites, including the city administration building, Spartak Stadium, a power substation and a TV tower.
Russian military sources said units from the Western Group of Forces were continuing operations to seize full control of Kupiansk and surrounding areas.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Moscow refers to as a “special military operation.” The Kremlin has demanded that Kyiv withdraw troops from four regions it annexed in 2022 — Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson — and for Ukraine to forswear joining military alliances.
Ukraine has rejected those demands as an ultimatum and insists that a cease-fire must precede any meaningful negotiations.
