A mum has shared how to keep bananas fresh for two days – AFTER cutting them open.

Amy Lynn Cross, 45, from Washington, US, shares tips with her 88,000 followers on Instagram (@thecrosslegacy) and on her blog, The Cross Legacy.

Her recent hack reveals the best way to keep a banana fresh – the food item she says she is asked about the most, as so many of her followers struggle with decomposing bananas.

The tip simply involves storing the unused portion of the banana inside a sealed glass jar, and placing it in the fridge.

Demonstrating how it works by testing her hack alongside the usual method of leaving the banana open to the elements, Amy put half a banana with skin on in one jar, half a banana with skin off in another and chopped up banana in the third.

The banana that wasn't stored in the jar can be seen browning and inedible.

Amy swears by the trick and says if you want the banana to stay fresh for as long as possible, to keep any remaining fruit in the peel.

She shared a video of her showing the method on Instagram with a few top tips.

Comparing her banana theory with two chopped up bananas, Amy said: “That people ask me about the most, that they throw away the most, do you ever throw away these.

"Look how nasty that looks. These bananas were cut at the same exact time as these bananas, so these are over two days old and they look totally fresh.”

One follower said: “You are AH-MAZING!” [sic]

Someone else said: “Yay so ready!”

"Wow!" added another user.
