Hero dog waits SIX HOURS besides friend hit by car
This incredible video shows how a dog waited for help for at least six after his friend was hit by a car.
Samantha Zimmer, a 36-year-old accountant from Houston, Texas, saw a Facebook plea from a local mail carrier who had spotted the dogs at 11 am but was unable to get them help.
She decided to find the two pets, Corey and Matthew, with her fiance, George Dix, by driving around the area described on the Facebook post and looking out for the helpless dogs.
After driving 50 minutes towards Dayton from Houston, they came across Corey lying on the road at about 4 pm and knew that Matthew would be nearby.
Corey was initially wary but was won over by a can of sausages. After he was secured, they went to recover a tail-wagging Matthew from the ditch. As the ditch was holding water, George had to lift Matthew out onto the bank before he could be put on the pallet of blankets waiting for him in the car.
Samantha and George brought the dogs to Houston to receive medical care: Matthew had a fractured radius in his front right arm, right femoral head, and a cracked front canine as well as being covered in road rash and fleas. They were reunited the day Matthew was picked up from the emergency room: they rode together happily while Matthew was brought to his medical foster home.
Both dogs are currently being fostered separately through a non-profit rescue called Lola's Lucky Day whilst they begin the long road to recovery and finish their medical treatments. They are currently in the process of approving an adopter in Wisconsin.
Samantha said: “When we headed out to find these dogs, we knew we might not make it in time. We were so relieved to see that Corey had stayed with Matthew and that, despite his injuries, he was still breathing normally, wagging his tail, and happy to see us".
She also added:" Matthew yelped in pain but never once tried to bite, that's how sweet he is. We knew then that he was a fighter and we had a chance of saving him. It’s clear he had been suffering from neglect long before he was actually hit by the car.”
As a foster for Lola’s Lucky Day, Samantha shares all her rescue stories online to help bring awareness to the issue of homeless animals in Texas, generate donations for the medical care of the pair and ultimately find them great adoptive homes. The reaction to their rescue has been positive, with people wanting to help and donate from all over the world. However, some viewers have commented that they are disappointed that Matthew and Corey were being fostered in different homes.
Samantha emphasised that there are such limited foster spaces in Houston and that their priority was to put them in the best foster homes for their medical needs.
She said: "Matthew and Corey are both thriving. While they definitely got along great when they were homeless, they are not sad whatsoever in their foster homes. They have won the hearts of everyone who meets them with their appetite for joy and life.".
