Fossil hunter finds strange rock on beach and reveals ancient whale bone
A fossil hunter from New Zealand has uncovered an ancient whalebone encased in rock.
Mamlambo found the intriguing fossil on a beach and took it home to reveal what lay inside.
"It had an "S" shape on it which I remembered seeing in diagrams of whale ear bones," he said.
He used a kind of mini-jackhammer called an airscribe to chip away at the outer layers of rock and then placed the fossil in acid to eventually reveal the bone.
"The fossil turned out to be a periotic ear bone from a whale," he said.
"The process took 2 months to complete as numerous acid baths were required. It will be donated to a local museum for further study," he concluded.
The edit of this footage was completed on April 29.
