Turkish police clash with protesters in Istanbul on the anniversary of the Suruc massacre
Police clashed with protesters in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday 20 July -- the seventh anniversary of the Suruc bombing.
The 2015 suicide attack by Dokumacilar, a Turkish offshoot of ISIS, targeted Turkish leftists in the Suruç district of Sanliurfa Province, killing 33 people.
While the Turkish government backed some rebels in Syria's civil war, it was resolutely opposed to Kurdish rebels and to left-wing opposition in Turkey, and responded firmly to the protesters' attempts to mark the massacre.
Police cracked down on the protest in Kadikoy, Istanbul, detaining and, according to protesters, beating some of those there.
