Thai man finds rare EXPENSIVE pearl while having romantic dinner
A man named Sittidhet Chaiwan found a rare pearl worth more than 2,000 pounds while having a romantic birthday meal with his girlfriend, in Phayao province, northern Thailand on August 24.
At dinner Chaiwan, 26, picked up a sea snail he bought from a local market and ate it. As he put it into his mouth, he felt something solid, like a small stone. He spat it out and was astonished: he almost ate a beautiful orange-coloured pearl!
Chaiwan was very curious to find out what that mysterious object was so he Googled it and realised it looked like a Melo pearl used in expensive jewelry.
The next morning, the man took the gem to the Chiang Mai Testing Laboratory and the staff confirmed that it was a real Melo pearl. The laboratory also issued a document confirming the pearl's authenticity. The pearl is 2.63x2.63x2.61 mm in size and 0.151 carats.
A Melo pearl can be sold for up to 17,000 dollars or a little more than 14,363 pounds per carat depending on the quality and colour. The pearl he found is worth 2,000 pounds.
Chaiwan commented on the amazing discovery by saying: "I'd like to sell the pearl as the money will be a big help. I believe there's a big demand for Melo pearls as they are rare". He also added that he might treat this girlfriend if he managed to sell the pearl.
Katib Patjira, Chaiwan's girlfriend, said: "This is the best birthday surprise I've ever had. It's special for both of us and I think it's a sign of good luck. I hope that my boyfriend will take me on a holiday once he has sold the pearl".
