Fishermen found 10 Rohingya refugees floating on styrofoam boxes off the coast of Thailand on Tuesday.

Trawlers spotted the group - believed to have come by boat from a refugee camp in Bangladesh - drifting in the waters between Bulon Don and Khao Yai Islands in Satun province on September 6.

Authorities rescued and fed the famished travellers, who claimed they had not eaten for 10 days. They also underwent Covid-19 screening before being taken to the La-Ngu district police station for questioning.

The castaways claimed that they left the camp in Bangladesh before setting off from Myanmar's Rakhine State hoping to reach Indonesia but stormy weather battered their vessel, throwing some passengers aboard.

Thai maritime police have reportedly ordered a search for the rest of the group, believed to have been beached on other islands near coastal Satun.

Meanwhile, the group of 10 were taken to a temporary shelter, where 59 other Rohingya, who were rescued by border police on Koh Dong island last June, are staying.

Local media said officials have found 41 other Rohingya people - 31 men, eight women, and two children - on an island near Thung Wa district today. All of them were allegedly starving and dehydrated.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if they are victims of human trafficking, police said.

The Tatmadaw, Myanmar's armed forces, has been known to brutalise ethnic minorities, notably the Muslim Rohingya people.

International rights groups have slammed the inhumane treatment of the minorities, which have reportedly involved gang rapes, village arsons, and infanticide.

Today, an estimated 890,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to the Cox Bazar region in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, there are about 92,00 of them in Thailand, 102,000 in Malaysia, and 21,000 in India.
