A Filipino migrant worker claimed 'balut' duck eggs hatched and arrived as baby birds after ordering them from home to enjoy in Kuwait.

Gio Miranda bought the delicacy online which took almost two weeks to ship and finally reached his workplace in Safat on May 30.

The homesick employee was excited to open the package and boil his snacks until he heard an unusual chirping sound from one of the trays.

Footage shows scissors being used to carefully let out a healthy chick which he took in as a pet.

He said: ‘I knew it was a bird but I did not believe my ears at first. It was funny.'

The worker named his new pet bird Balut and lived in his dorm with him.

Balut is a fertilised developing duck egg embryo that is boiled and slurped from shell. It is usually dipped in spiced vinegar and salt.
