An incredible video shows a baby girl being born while still inside her amniotic sac in a rare occurrence that happens in fewer than 80,000 births.

Mother Naiara Santos, 36, gave birth to twin girls at the Evangelical Hospital in Iporá, Goiás State, Brazil, by caesarean section on 10 October.

Born first, little Rafaella was delivered normally while her sister Isabella was born ‘en caul’, surprising Dr Leandra Campos, 34, and her team.

The obstetrician shared images of the rare birth on social media with the footage showing Rafaella being born first in the ‘upside down’ cephalic position, according to Dr Campos.

The video then shows Isabella being delivered inside the amniotic sac. The doctor bursts the sac as the baby is curled up inside, releasing the mother’s waters.

Dr Campos said it is only possible to find out that the baby is being born en caul at the time of delivery, adding that Rafaella and Isabella are “fraternal or non-identical twins”.

The obstetrician, graduated in 2011 and started working as a gynaecologist and obstetrician in 2015, told Jam Press: “En caul births are very beautiful, because it's the way the baby is inside the uterus, still not knowing they are born, still receiving oxygen through the umbilical cord.

“You need a lot of technique for them to come out still inside the sac. We can see how they sit inside the belly before they are born.

“Although rare, it has happened to me a few times. And it's always a huge emotion! The whole team is ecstatic.

“The mother and babies are all doing fine. They were discharged at the end of the day on 11 October.

“Naiara, who comes from Iporá, is 36 years old, married, and this was her first pregnancy.”

En caul births, which Dr Campos refers to as “magical”, only occur in around 1 in 80,000 deliveries. During pregnancy, each baby has their own amniotic sac that protects them from scrapes and knocks.

En caul births are more common in caesarean section births when the infants are pulled out of the mother’s womb via surgery.

Social media users took to the doctor’s Instagram page to wish the family well following the ‘magical birth’ after the clip was shared, racking up 3,800 likes.

One user said: “That is wonderful… maternal desire and good birthing conditions! Ending: everyone happy!”

“God you are wonderful. Congratulations Naiara for your beautiful princesses. May they bring you lots of joy!” commented another.

Someone else said: “Several tears fell from my eyes here. The most beautiful thing!”

Another wrote: “Very beautiful, exciting!”

“What a beautiful birth. God is wonderful, takes care of every detail,” said someone else.
