Mom gives birth to 11lbs 8oz baby naturally three weeks early
A mom gave birth to a 11lbs 8oz newborn naturally three weeks early - with the tot already wearing clothes for three month olds.
Holly Bargar, 31, was 37 weeks pregnant when her waters broke at 2am on March 15 as she was asleep in bed at home.
Doctors had warned Holly her baby was on the larger side during frequent scans to measure his growth as she was classed as high risk due to having type 1 diabetes, but the mom-of-three says she was determined to give birth vaginally.
Her labor progressed quickly and her the obstetrician was helping with another delivery when Holly felt the urge to push.
Her baby boy, Dane, now weight weeks old, became stuck as she pushed and his head and abdomen was delivered - with 15 medical staff including nurses and a respiratory specialist stepping into ensure he was born safely.
The newborn tipped the scales at a whopping 11lbs 8oz – 4lbs more than the average newborn baby in the US - and is already wearing clothing for three month olds at eight weeks.
Holly says big babies run in her family - with Dane's siblings, Luke, five, and Waylon, three, weighing in at 8lbs 15oz and 9lbs 4oz respectively.
Holly, a registered dietitian, from Salisbury, Maryland, US, said: "Basically I don't think it was until I started pushing that that the nurse and I realised how big he was."
"I think that they were aware from charts from office he was on bigger side but not 11lbs 8oz big. "
"I had to wait to push for an hour because they needed a doctor in the room."
"The delivery itself was traumatic - he got stuck twice. "
"One of the reasons why they wanted to do the c-section was due to the risk of shoulder dystocia. "
"That did happen, his shoulder did get stuck, and nurses had to jump up and push him through my pelvis. "
"His abdomen got stuck. "
"That was a scary part as he was halfway out of me. "
"I didn't even think about myself, it was hectic. "
"I feel like I almost blacked out. "
"I had a second-degree tear, but I don't think it was much worse than with my other two children. "
"It's the scariest thing I've ever experienced, for my husband Luke, 30, and I both."
"When baby Dane came out he was purple and laying there, we had no idea what was going on. "
"I still remember making eye contact with him and it felt like the world was slowing down waiting for him to cry."
Holly had previously discussed having a c-section with doctors as her baby was "measuring big" - but wanted to try and have a vaginal birth."
She said: "I was adamant I wanted to try have him vaginally. "
"They [doctors] said it did have a lot to do with genetics."
"My husband and I were pretty big babies and it runs in our family." "
After a 12-hour labour, with doctors having to manoeuvre him through Holly's pelvis, Dane was born at 2.05pm on March 15, 2025.
To keep an eye on his swelling all over his body that doctors think could be related to insulin resistance, doctors kept mum and son under a close eye before they were discharged two days later.
Holly suffered with postpartum headaches and had an MRI the day after Dane was born, but "never figured out" the cause, while Dane dropped some weight which caused concern."
Holly's milk was also late "coming in as it was such a traumatic delivery", with Dane being diagnosed with a tongue-tie. "
Two months on, the family are "doing OK"."
Holly said: "He is so cute, his brothers love him they won't leave him alone."
"For the most part he's a happy little guy and loves to sleep."
"Being a third kid, you have to go with the flow."
"It's funny, we have a family group chat and everyone was guessing how much he was going to weigh."
"We do that every time a grandbaby or cousin is born."
"My nephew was a big baby at 10lb 8oz and we thought there's no way this one's going to be bigger."
"My husband was the one that texted them all and said 'you're not going to believe it'."
"They were all saying 'oh my god, what happened? Is Holly OK?'. "
"No one knew he was going to be over 11lbs and, going back, if I had known he was going to be that big I wouldn't have wanted to put either of our lives in danger." "
Holly did some "research" into pelvic floor exercises and different positions she could give birth in when she knew her baby was going to be on the larger side."
"I'm so grateful we're both alive and well, and all is OK," she said."
"Online, people are in disbelief."
"I'm constantly getting comments saying 'oh my god, I thought my 8lbs baby was big'. "
"It just goes to show every pregnancy is different."
