The harvesting of saffron is underway in Kashmir region, a deeply labour-intensive process in which the beautiful flowers are picked for their stigma, which is then most often turned into a spice.

Thanks in part to that labour-intensity, that spice is one of the most expensive food products in the world.

Footage filmed on 29 October shows workers in the fields, picking the delicate, small purple flowers.

In this field in Pampore, saffron is harvested just once a year, from late October till mid November.

Kashmir has more than 3700 hectares of land under cultivation for saffron.

The Pampore area of Pulwama is the main hub for growing it. However, it is now being cultivated across other parts of the Kashmir Valley too.
