An orangutan bundled up in a warm blanket as temperatures fell in northern Thailand.

Like the Little Red Riding Hood, the primate wrapped itself in a red blanket to keep from freezing in its enclosure at the Chiang Mai Zoo on November 3.

Zookeepers have taken precautions to protect the animals as the country's cold season approaches and temperatures fall to single digits in degrees Celsius.

Heaters were also installed to keep the macaws warm, while toasty light bulbs were placed in the cages of the zoo's cold-blooded denizens.

Staff also covered the ground with more hay for goats to rest on, and the orangutans were given gunny bags to wear as cloaks. Vitamin supplements were also added to the animals' meals.

Zoo director Wuttichai Muangman said: 'The weather in the northern region has begun to cool in the last week.

'Because the Chiang Mai Zoo is situated on a mountain, it is colder than usual, which may have an impact on the animals' health, especially at night.

'As a result, we have implemented tight regulations to care for and warm them.'

Thailand's meteorological department said the country's cold season will officially begin on October 30, adding it is expected to linger until mid-February 2023.

Locals will experience the lowest temperatures between December and the end of January, the agency said.
