Saint Martin's Day was celebrated on the Charles Bridge in Prague this Friday. Saint Martin, the patron saint of veterans of all wars, rode across the famous Charles Bridge on a white horse. He was accompanied by Roman soldiers, musicians, street performers and other retinues in themed outfits.
Saint Martin's Day is celebrated annually in the Czech Republic on November 11th. On this holiday, goose is traditionally baked all over the republic and at exactly 11:11 the first bottles of young St. Martin's wine are opened (Svatomartinské víno).
The tradition originated in the 18th century during the reign of Emperor Joseph II, when on St. Martin's Day vineyard owners came to their winemakers to try new wine and decide whether to extend the contract with them for another year or hire other specialists.
