American coast guard crews repatriate 68 Cuban migrants back to their homeland
Coast Guard crews from the U.S. have repatriated a total of 68 people to Cuba over the weekend.
Following interdictions off the US state of Florida's coast, the crews from Cutter Robert Yered extradited the Cuban immigrants back to their homeland on Sunday, January 22.
Sector Key West watchstanders were alerted by Coast Guard Cutter Legare's team of a migrant vessel located about 15 miles south of Key Colony Beach in Monroe County at about 6:20 pm on Wednesday, January 18.
In addition, Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater C-130 law enforcement aircrew notified Sector Key West watchstanders of a wooden vessel at 8.20am on Friday, January 20.
It was reportedly located about 5 miles southeast of the island of Dry Tortugas, also in Florida's Monroe County.
The same day Sector Key West watchstanders received a notification of a migrant vessel located about 50 miles southwest of Key West at approximately 2:35pm.
Coast Guard Cutter James' crew alerted Sector Key West watchstanders of a migrant vessel, Friday, at approximately 6:40 p.m., about 25 miles south of Big Pine Key.
The US Coast Guard District 7 said in a statement: 'The Coast Guard Mohawk's crew interdicted this migrant vessel approximately five miles east of Dry Tortugas, Florida, January 29, 2023.
'The people were repatriated back to Cuba on January 22, 2023.'
Coast Guard District Seven Lieutenant Commander Tanner Stiehl Coast Guard said: 'Coast Guard and partner agency air and sea crews patrol all day, every day to ensure people return to their families alive.
'Use safe and legal means available to come to the United States.'
Coast Guard crews have interdicted a total of 5,183 Cubans back home since Saturday, October 1, 2022.
